January Marvel solicits were posted today! Follow along through link; below links go to full-sized covers when available.
MARVEL ILLUSTRATED: THE ILIAD #2 (of 8): This one has a pretty Paolo Rivera cover, and I'm a sucker for pictures of women in classical dress in battle. (It's a very specific fetish, but then, I have many.) Rivera doesn't do the interiors, though, although at least none of the interior art is being done by the guy who made Helen ugly on the last cover.
ANITA BLAKE, VAMPIRE HUNTER: GUILTY PLEASURES #7 (of 12): I just need to pause and point and laugh, every month.
ULTIMATE HUMAN #1 (of 4): The Hulk hitting Iron Man: such a hit, they're doing it over in the Ultimateverse too!
ULTIMATE IRON MAN II #2 (of 4): I'm too terrified of Orson Scott Card's take on Tony to get near this--but hey! Ultimate Rhodey?
ULTIMATES 3 #2 (of 5): Wait, wait, the Ultimates are fighting actual *supervillains* now? Jeph, you just don't understand the *spirit* of this series! Points for Thor vs. Valkyrie, though. (Although if Jeph *actually* has Thor seriously beating on a woman who, in Ultimateverse last I checked, had no powers, only a chainmail bikini? And was not an especially impressive combatant? I am not going to be pleased. At all.)
AVENGERS CLASSIC #8 [I'm linking the original cover from comics.org]: Whee Kang! I've read these issues already, but I'm enjoying the reprints and McDuffie's backups.
ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST #3 (of 6): Note to self (again): read Annihilation back issues. Perhaps this can be the next project after Peter David's Hulk.
AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #9: Well, looks like SOMEONE's a Skrull, from the cover. In other news, I dropped this one early on because I wasn't really into that level of clusterfuck (even deliberate, in-universe clusterfuck) in my comics, and it doesn't look like that's getting any better.
CAPTAIN AMERICA #34: *shrugs* *sighs* You know, I don't really like *Captain America*; I like *Steve Rogers*. That said, I don't mind stories about people who try to fill the role for awhile, even (sometimes especially) when they're total jerks. (Hi, John Walker. Hi, nameless guy from the fifties.) And I'm fine with seeing what Brubaker does with this, since I trust him as a writer. (I'd rather prefer if Alex Ross weren't involved, though. He's a bad influence; cf. my comments on JSA.)
I am sad, though, that we do know the guy's race and gender definitively, and he's definitely both white and male.
DAREDEVIL #104: In answer to the solicit's questions: NO and NO, Matt! You must suffer ETERNALLY for our reading pleasure! No clue what's up with Mr. Fear, though.
IMMORTAL IRON FIST #13: WHEE KUNG FU BATTLE! ...it surprises me sometimes how much I enjoy this series despite the fact that I don't, actually, follow the plotlines very well or very carefully. Possibly it is just the fighting. Uh--and Danny's costume. I AM PREDICTABLE.
FANTASTIC FOUR #553: Oh my GOD! REED--you COULDN'T HAVE! In your best of possible futures....EVERYONE WAS DRAWN BY MICHAEL TURNER?! For THIS you made Thor and imprisoned your friends in the Negative Zone?
HOWARD THE DUCK #4 (of 4): Or maybe Reed's future just involves ducks. Heee, ducks! I don't think Howard amuses me enough to read a whole series (or even mini) about him, but I loved his little Civil War bit (he was banned from registering; the authorities do not want to acknowledge his existence).
IRON MAN #25: Oh good. Possibly I missed the memo on this, but I'm glad Tony's out as commander of SHIELD. Now maybe we can get Nick back! Or Val or Dum Dum or Gabe or, hell, Sharon's probably too much to hope for at this point, isn't it. *sighs*
IRON MAN: ENTER THE MANDARIN #5 (of 6): It is a dragon!
INCREDIBLE XXXX #113 (Note: Not Actual Title): Dontcha love these classified solicits? Especially when they make it sound like some sort of horrifying Marvel Max title, possibly drawn by Iceman? (Note: The solicit does specify that it is written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente, and penciled by Khoi Pham. Just to reassure you.)
HULK #1: Meanwhile, someone is dead (but not the Hulk, Iron Man, She-Hulk, or Leonard Samson), and the Hulk has changed color again. Wonder if they've killed Rick Jones? He's really the only one of the Hulk's oldest cast members I can think of that isn't dead already (unless Thunderbolt Ross or Betty are back since last I checked).
WWH AFTERSMASH: DAMAGE CONTROL #1 (of 3): Go Damage Control! I need to go read their old series.
MARVEL ADVENTURES HULK #7: Wow, this really is the month for multicolored Hulks! (The Silver Hulk: mentioned in the solicit, not pictured on the cover. Comes with bonus Silver Rick Jones and Silver Monkey, because MA Rick is like Yorick, sort of.)
MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #35: Oh noes! It is Venom, the boy wonder! Sidekick fans should make sure not to miss this one. :)
MARVEL ADVENTURES THE AVENGERS #20: You know, I'm really looking forward to this one. I *like* Jan and Hank, I like this book, and I think MA!Jan and Hank have a potential for a really interestingly functional--or, okay, probably dysfunctional--relationship.
MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS #5: I'd be more impressed by your "show off your chest AND ass at the same time" contortion, Kazar, if you weren't hiding most of that ass behind that tree trunk. You have to pay attention to positioning as well as position! ...that said, Savage Land + Wrecking Crew + Greg Land *not* doing the *interior* art means there's a pretty good chance I'll be checking the book out.
MIGHTY AVENGERS #8: Wasn't this solicited before? Anyway, I'd be more in favor of New Powers for Janet if they didn't come with being possessed by Carnage. Also...okay, I generally tend to assume that if Jan hasn't gotten the size-increasing powers by now, it's probably because she doesn't especially want them. Because they drive you nuts a la Hank, or something.
NEW AVENGERS ANNUAL #2: All I've got to say on New Avengers is: good, a different artist. And can we please get rid of Wolverine?
YOUNG AVENGERS PRESENTS #1 (of 6): It's about TIME! Also, yay Patriot!
SHE-HULK #25: This part speaks for itself, I think: "two extra special backups featuring the rise of malevolent Man-Elephant and the Jade Giantess visits the Marvel offices!"
THE TWELVE #1 (of 12): This all sounds like a whole lot of fun. I like JMS, I like Golden Age heroes! Never heard of any of *these*, although apparently they were actually published by Timely.
CABLE & DEADPOOL #49: HEE, Deadpool and Kazar! And his sabretooth sidekick Zabu! Awesome.
ESSENTIAL CAPTAIN AMERICA VOL. 4 TPB: OMG *YES*. BUY THIS GUYS. Except those of you who prefer color, in which case, you should buy the colorful trades instead!

Date: 2007-10-16 09:13 pm (UTC)Like you, I'm a Steve Rogers fan, not a Captain America fan (except in the sense that he embodies the role.) And well, the prospect of Bucky as Cap mostly makes me miss Steve Rogers more. I like Bucky tons, as a standalone character. And even as a standalone story arc, it might work for me... but it's happening in context of nu-Marvel, which means that Bucky is going to be a Captain America working for Tony Stark, enforcing the SHRA, reaffirming Marvel's position that Tony was right, Steve was wrong, and this neocon nu-Marvel is the morally correct world. And an in an even more meta sense, it's a reaffirmation of Quesada's assertion that the Steve Rogers Cap was old fashioned and out of touch and had to go, and look, here's our spiffy new guntoting black clad government tool Cap! Essentially the US Agent story done *straight*.
And well... I don't have quite the same trust for Brubaker. I'm sure the story will be written well, but he's the one that had Cap send Tony that ridiculous letter, which basically said "hey, I don't actually believe in my position, so be sure to take my symbols and use them in this cause I hate!"

Date: 2007-10-16 10:19 pm (UTC)(Actually, my current cynical theory on Marvel was that they're making us hate Tony et al on purpose so we are happy when Hulk comes and SMASHES. And hey, it's working--I've enjoyed World War Hulk.)
But there's certainly a tendency toward New and Dark as well, I'll agree with you there. It's a sort of storyline Brubaker does well--hell, he's excellent writing Daredevil--and hell, he's the one who gave us Bucky Barnes, Cyborg Assassin in the first place.
But really? I'm expecting a storyarc of Bucky or Hawkeye or whoever the hell else they put in the suit; that it will be reasonably well written under Brubaker although possibly really unfortunately when other people get ahold of it; and eventually? Marvel will get this out of their systems and Steve will be back. Because that's the way comics work.
Hell. Captain America survived being rented to Rob Liefeld. He can survive this.

Date: 2007-10-17 02:03 am (UTC)I am nearly tempted to buy this one, and I'm pretty much only into the Hulk under PAD. But Tony, Jen, and Doc Samson as an investigative team sounds kind of hilariously doomed. On the other hand, I agree with you that Rick Jones is the most likely victim, and I dunno that I particularly want to read about that.
MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #35:
That looks...really hysterical. *g* I need to be reading more Adventures!
WWH AFTERSMASH: DAMAGE CONTROL #1 (of 3): Go Damage Control! I need to go read their old series.
!!!! Need need now! (And yes, you should. :)
Also...okay, I generally tend to assume that if Jan hasn't gotten the size-increasing powers by now, it's probably because she doesn't especially want them. Because they drive you nuts a la Hank, or something.
I seem to remember that she did, under Austen. Not that I was reading Austen, but I remember the bitchy reviews.

Date: 2007-10-18 05:56 pm (UTC)Now you mention it, that really does sound kind of awesome.
I need to be reading more Adventures!
You do! I've really been enjoying the Marvel Adventures titles I've been reading.
I seem to remember that she did, under Austen.
That is sad.
